Why Us

Why St. Clair Shores homeowners call us first for fire damage cleanup

We are on site in about an hour

Someone picks up our phone at any hour of the day or night, all year. You will not be leaving a message. St. Clair Shores addresses are usually reached inside an hour, and on a fire that hour is worth having. Smoke is still spreading through the house while everyone stands outside.

The inspection is free and nothing is signed

We walk the house with you at no cost and with no commitment attached. You will hear what we are seeing as we go through it. We will not put a final number on the job in the driveway. On a fire, the full extent is behind surfaces that have to be opened and cleaned before anyone can say, and a firm price before that is a guess.

We deal with your insurance company directly

We take the documentation to your carrier ourselves, photos, readings and scope notes, and your own copy arrives with every line on it. We handle the back and forth with your adjuster and with the plumbers and trades on the job. If a claims specialist tells you a preferred vendor is required, it is not. You hire who you want, and we work for you.

Local, based in Rochester Hills, and a long history in this trade

We are based in Rochester Hills, and St. Clair Shores is a short run for our crews. The people who started the company spent their careers in construction, contracting and cleaning. On a fire that background is the difference between reading a building and looking at it. We tell you plainly what can be cleaned and what has to come out.

We know the housing stock here

St. Clair Shores nearly quadrupled in the fifties, and it shows. Most of the city is postwar bungalows and ranches on narrow, tightly spaced lots, and most of them sit over a basement that holds the smell of a fire long after the rooms above are cleaned. Closer to the water the picture changes again, with miles of residential canals and homes that back straight onto them. Those houses sit close to each other and close to boats, fuel and storage, and access for a crew is tighter than it looks from the street.

We found out we had a water leak from our bathroom tub when we brought our newborn home this past winter. It unfortunately needed to be a complete restoration which my husband and I had never gone through before. We were paired with Michelle as our project manager/overseer during this. I have nothing but amazing...

Same story as at least one other reviewer. Our ice maker water line started leaking and created a bigger mess than we realized. Our plumber recommended Response Flood & Fire for mitigation, and they were out the very next day drying out our kitchen floor and basement ceiling. Austin and Clayton were both amazing to...

Wonderful experience during such a stressful time. They came out immediately, the employees were extremely polite and respectful, and kept me updated every step of the way. They also helped guide me through the insurance claims process which seemed overwhelming at first. I would definitely recommend.

They responded FAST and had dryers going for the floor in our kitchen and basement. Austin was our Mitigation Project Manager, he and everyone on his...

I cannot say enough positive things about our experience with this company. We had significant flooding after a plumbing repair job went wildly wrong over the weekend. Ryan and Mike did an excellent job, start to finish, in remediating the damage. They were very responsive, professional, and definitely know their...

Our Process

Our fire damage repair process in St. Clair Shores, MI

Step 1. You call and a person answers

Call at any hour and you get a person on the line. We ask what burned, whether the fire department has released the house, and what part of the building is involved. Then we tell you what to do and what to leave alone until we arrive. An hour is the usual drive to St. Clair Shores.

Step 2. We walk it with you, free

Before anything starts we go through the house with you. It costs nothing and there is nothing to sign. We point out how far the smoke carried, what has taken heat, and where we expect to find more once we open things up. The scope is clear to you before the work begins.

Step 3. We secure the property

An open house keeps taking damage from weather and from anyone who walks up. We board up and cover the openings, and we make the affected space safe to work in. On the tight lots here that also means keeping the work from spilling onto the house next door. Equipment is cleaned and decontaminated before it comes inside.

Step 4. We clean the structure and deal with the water

The building itself is our scope. Soot is acidic, and staining on porous material gets worse the longer it is left, so cleaning starts early. Heat drives the smell into the material, and anything that will not give it up is removed. The fire service also left a lot of water in the house, and in a city where most homes have a basement that water finds its way down, so we handle it in the same job. Contents are not our line of work, and we will refer you to a contents company for those.

Step 5. Paperwork, and your carrier

Photographs and notes run from the first visit to the last, so every charge has a record behind it. We price from a current Xactimate list, the one most carriers use. Crews are on site a day at a time, generally four to eight hours or longer. Invoices go out three to five business days after the job is done, payment is due in thirty days, and GreenSky financing is there if you need it.

Our restoration project took several months to complete. If you’re going through an insurance claim, be patient, as the process itself can take time. Dandre, who inspected the damage, prepared the estimate, and worked with our insurance company, was knowledgeable, professional, and very helpful throughout the process. Michelle, our project manager, was always responsive, caring, and worked hard to make sure everything was done right. The restoration work was completed by Leo and Augie, and they were outstanding. Leo replaced our tile, completed the plumbing work, repaired our closet organizer, and paid close attention to every detail. Augie did an excellent job painting. They were respectful, hardworking, and treated our home as if it were their own. Overall, although the process took time, the final result was excellent. Thank you, Dandre, Michelle, Leo, and Augie, for your professionalism, dedication, and quality work!

FAQs

Common questions about fire damage restoration in St. Clair Shores, MI

Questions we get from our customers' and our answers.

How quickly can you reach a St. Clair Shores home after a fire?

A person answers our phone at any hour of any day, and we are normally at a St. Clair Shores address in about an hour. Speed is not a slogan on a fire. Smoke keeps moving after the flames are out, and soot begins staining porous surfaces from the moment it lands. Every hour early is usually material we can clean instead of replace.

Why does the smell reach the whole house when the fire stayed in one room in St. Clair Shores?

Smoke travels, and heat forces it down into whatever it touches. These are compact postwar houses, so the distance from a kitchen to a back bedroom is very short. Most of them have a basement, and the smell settles down there and stays. That is why a room that looks clean can still smell weeks after everything visible has been wiped down.

Our St. Clair Shores house is on a canal. Does that affect the work?

It can. Canal lots are narrow and the houses sit close together, so access for equipment and for a crew takes more planning than a standard driveway. Neighboring structures and anything stored near the water are also closer to the fire than they look from the street. None of it changes the work itself, but it does change how we stage it, which is one more reason we walk the property with you first.

Do you clean belongings after a St. Clair Shores fire?

No, we do not. What we restore is the building, its framing and its finished surfaces. We are not a contents company, so we do not clean, restore or store furniture or personal items. When belongings need that we will refer you to a company that specializes in contents. We say it up front so nothing comes as a surprise partway through.

Can our insurer require a particular contractor in St. Clair Shores?

No. A vendor a carrier sends is under contract to the carrier and not to you, and the choice of who works on your home stays with you. We hear this claim often enough that it is worth saying plainly. Hire us and we still take the adjuster on directly, document the loss for the claim, answer their questions, and send you a copy of it all. Pricing comes off a current Xactimate list so the numbers are familiar to them.
