Why Us

Why Utica homeowners call us first for fire damage cleanup

We are on site in about an hour

Someone real answers our phone at any hour of any day, all year. No machine, no message passed along for the morning. We normally reach Utica addresses inside an hour. That speed counts after a fire, because soot does not sit still and it does not stop damaging surfaces once the flames are out.

The inspection is free and there is nothing to sign

We come out, walk the building with you and charge nothing for it. There is no paperwork to sign for the visit. We will not put a final figure on the job while standing in your yard, because on a fire the full extent only appears once surfaces are opened and cleaned. Anyone giving you an exact number before that is guessing at it.

We deal with your adjuster directly

We document the loss for your carrier with photos, moisture readings and scope notes. You get the same file, so every line is visible to you. We speak with your adjuster, your plumber and any other trade on the property, which keeps you out of the middle. Carriers sometimes push their own preferred vendor at you. You are not obliged to use them, and when you hire us we answer to you.

Local, and this is not new to us

We run out of Rochester Hills, a short drive from Utica. The founders spent their careers in construction, contracting and cleaning before starting the company. That history matters on a fire loss, where the question is what the heat and smoke did to the structure behind the finish. We tell you plainly which parts of the building are coming out.

We know the housing stock here

Utica is small, and it is old by local standards. Near the Clinton River sit houses that went up long before the subdivisions around them, with plaster on lath, solid trim and narrow, closed-off rooms. Those rooms hold smoke rather than let it spread, which sounds better than it is, because the odor concentrates in older porous materials that soak it up. Newer homes at the edges of the city behave the other way, with open plans that let smoke run.

We found out we had a water leak from our bathroom tub when we brought our newborn home this past winter. It unfortunately needed to be a complete restoration which my husband and I had never gone through before. We were paired with Michelle as our project manager/overseer during this. I have nothing but amazing...

Same story as at least one other reviewer. Our ice maker water line started leaking and created a bigger mess than we realized. Our plumber recommended Response Flood & Fire for mitigation, and they were out the very next day drying out our kitchen floor and basement ceiling. Austin and Clayton were both amazing to...

Wonderful experience during such a stressful time. They came out immediately, the employees were extremely polite and respectful, and kept me updated every step of the way. They also helped guide me through the insurance claims process which seemed overwhelming at first. I would definitely recommend.

I cannot say enough positive things about our experience with this company. We had significant flooding after a plumbing repair job went wildly wrong over the weekend. Ryan and Mike did an excellent job, start to finish, in remediating the damage. They were very responsive, professional, and definitely know their...

Our Process

Our fire damage repair process in Utica, MI

Step 1. You call and a person answers

Call at any hour and a person will pick up. We ask what happened, whether the fire service has released the building and whether you are somewhere safe, and we tell you what to do next. Then a crew is dispatched. Arrival in Utica is normally about an hour later.

Step 2. We walk it with you, free

Nothing is charged for the walkthrough and there is nothing to sign for it. We go through the building with you, including the rooms that never saw flame, because that is usually where smoke ends up. You will see what we found and understand the scope before anybody starts work.

Step 3. We secure the property

Fire and the fire service both leave a building open. We board up windows and doors, cover what is exposed and make the working areas safe to walk into. Where it is warranted we set containment, so soot and dust stay inside the affected part of the house rather than moving into the rest of it.

Step 4. We clean the structure and deal with the water

Putting a fire out takes a lot of water, and that water is now inside your floors and walls. We pull it out and dry the structure at the same time as we clean the building. Soot is acidic and stains porous surfaces more deeply the longer it stays, so cleaning is not something to leave for later. Our air movers, dehumidifiers and scrubbers are cleaned and decontaminated before they enter the house. What cannot be saved comes out, and we explain each call before we make it. Our work is the structure. Belongings that need cleaning go to a contents company, and we can refer you to one.

Step 5. Paperwork, and your claim

We document the job with photographs and notes from the first visit onward. We price from a current Xactimate list, the same one most carriers use, and our crews work four to eight hours on site on a working day. Invoicing follows three to five business days after completion, with payment due within thirty days. Where a claim is open we document what the claim needs and keep talking to your adjuster. GreenSky financing can be arranged if you need it.

Our restoration project took several months to complete. If you’re going through an insurance claim, be patient, as the process itself can take time. Dandre, who inspected the damage, prepared the estimate, and worked with our insurance company, was knowledgeable, professional, and very helpful throughout the process. Michelle, our project manager, was always responsive, caring, and worked hard to make sure everything was done right. The restoration work was completed by Leo and Augie, and they were outstanding. Leo replaced our tile, completed the plumbing work, repaired our closet organizer, and paid close attention to every detail. Augie did an excellent job painting. They were respectful, hardworking, and treated our home as if it were their own. Overall, although the process took time, the final result was excellent. Thank you, Dandre, Michelle, Leo, and Augie, for your professionalism, dedication, and quality work!

FAQs

Common questions about fire damage restoration in Utica, MI

Questions we get from our customers' and our answers.

How fast can you get to an address in Utica?

Our line is answered by a person every hour of every day of the year, and our normal arrival time in Utica is about an hour. Do not wait for your adjuster before calling us. Soot keeps working on surfaces from the moment the fire is out, and the damage it does gets harder to reverse as the hours pass. Call once the fire service says the building is safe.

Utica has some older homes. Does the age of the house change a fire job?

It does. Older houses here often have plaster on lath, solid trim and small closed rooms, and those porous surfaces take up smoke readily and hold on to the smell. Newer construction around the city tends to have open plans and longer duct runs, so smoke travels further but has less to soak into. We look at what the building is made of before deciding how to approach the cleaning.

Is the water from the fire hoses part of the job in Utica?

Yes, and it is one of the reasons fire losses take longer than people expect. The fire service puts a large volume of water into the building, and it soaks into subfloor, drywall and insulation. Left alone it damages the structure further and can bring on mold. We remove the water and dry the building as part of the same job.

Will you clean the furniture and personal items in our Utica home?

We will not, and we say so early so nobody is surprised. Our side of it is the building itself: walls, floors, framing and everything fixed in place. Contents cleaning and storage is a separate trade. We can refer you to a contents company and coordinate with them while we work.

Who do you invoice for a fire loss in Utica?

We document the loss for your insurance carrier and give your adjuster the paperwork they need, and you get the same file so you can see the same detail they do. We stay in contact with your adjuster and with any other trades on the job. Filing the claim is your part, since the policy is yours. If your carrier short-pays the claim, we will show you where and keep pressing it.
