How our smoke damage cleanup works
Before we arrive, open windows if the weather allows, leave the heating and cooling off, and resist wiping the walls. Then call; someone answers at any hour and a crew heads your way.
At the free inspection, we trace where the smoke traveled. It follows air currents up stairwells, into closets and through gaps around pipes and outlets, so we check rooms that look clean as well as the one where the fire started.
Then we test-clean a small area on each type of surface. Painted walls, ceilings, cabinets and trim respond differently, so the test tells us whether the residue lifts with cleaning or whether the material needs replacing.
Cleaning goes top down, ceilings first, so residue doesn't drip onto surfaces already done. Drywall, insulation or carpet that holds the smell is removed, and stained areas may be sealed with a primer that blocks odor and bleed-through before painting.
Finally, we repaint and rebuild what came out and send our invoice and records to you and your insurer, asking the insurer to pay us. Financing is available for anything the policy doesn't cover.

Why does the smoke smell come back on humid days?
Smoke odor settles into porous materials such as drywall, insulation, carpet pad and unfinished wood. Warm, humid air releases it again, so a room that seemed fine can smell weeks later. The fix is removing the residue at its source or replacing the material, not covering the smell.
Can I just paint over smoke stains?
Not on its own. Paint over smoke residue tends to let the stain and the odor bleed back through, and it may not stick well. The residue has to be cleaned off first, then a sealing primer goes on before the finish coat.
What is a furnace puffback?
A puffback happens when an oil or gas furnace misfires and pushes soot and smoke out through the vents, sometimes coating several rooms in black film. Shut the system off, have a heating contractor repair it before you run it again, and photograph the damage for your insurer.
Does insurance cover smoke damage without a big fire?
Often, yes. Smoke from a small kitchen fire or a furnace puffback is commonly covered as part of a fire or smoke loss, even when nothing burned beyond the stove. Your adjuster decides. We photograph every affected room so light smoke damage isn't missed in the claim.
How long does smoke damage cleanup take?
Light smoke in a few rooms can often be cleaned in a few days. When drywall, insulation or flooring has to come out and be rebuilt, the job takes longer. We give you a timeline after the inspection and keep you updated as the work moves along.
